When TV was invented, it was never imagined that the reality would be more ‘real’ in the early 90’s when Charlie Persons, a British TV producer, came up with the idea of ‘Survivor’, a game show series.

It really spurred the trend of reality shows when it aired on May 31, 2000 on CBS. Now the ripple effect is such, that the whole world has joined the bandwagon of creating this show in their intercontinental and cosmopolitan versions.

The show is not just limited to nominations in Emmy Awards, but is also famous for its sound tracks, when it grabbed the award for Best Sound Mixing in 2001, Outstanding Special Class Program in 2002

Survivor, which has over 2 full years of survival days, is based on the theme that different strangers are marooned and isolated in a remote location. These individuals are divided into teams, which, in terms of Survivor are called ‘Tribes’. Teams are stranded on the chosen location, and are assigned different tasks, to test their mental and physical facade for survival. Different nerve-wracking locations like Australia, home of 8 out of 10 species of poisonous snakes, spiders and crocs in the world in season 2, created a tough challenge.

By competing, the tribes have to earn points to attain immunity from getting the boot. Earning points like food, letter from family etc., come along with subsequent wins.

Owing to the biggest role of tears, injuries, pains, frustrations, deceptions, collaborations, secret alliances et al., the tribes get dejected. Tribal Council crops up when 9 people are left and, interestingly, each member of a tribe has to cast a vote to eliminate his or her fellow companions. The exited members make a jury. Ultimately, when 2 members are left, the jury decides the winner or the survivor, who gets the winning amount.

The show really inspires age extremes as Jud Birza, aged 21, was the youngest winner in the 20th season and Rudy Boesc was 72, when she contested in the first season of the show. The real life characters have great influence on the audience’s lives, teaching them how to live in odd situations.
