South of Nowhere revolves around a family and its ways to adjust in the new surroundings it has moved into. The series starts with Carlin family moving to Los Angeles, from the small-town of Ohio. The show is famous because it dealt with the less explored subject of homosexuality. Spencer (Gabrielle Christian) is a lesbian, in love with Ashley (Mandy Musgrave). Spencer’s mother Paula does not approve of their relationship and wants Spencer to change herself. Spencer and Ashley continue to date each other with some intermittent distance arising in their relationship. Problem comes up as Aiden, who loves Ashley, creating a love-triangle sort of thing. Spencer’s father Arthur (Rob Moran) is a supportive man and does everything to keep the family united. Season one dealt with Spencer spending time to realize her true sexuality, concluding that she is a lesbian and there is no point running away from the fact. The series brings out the subject of racial discrimination, with Clay playing the role of the adopted black child of the Carlin family. During the prom shootout in season 2, Clay gets shot and dies. He is greatly missed by Spencer as they both shared a very close bond, Clay always standing beside her. The writing and the screenplay has been praised by almost every critic. South of Nowhere has some of the best roles, played out perfectly. The mindset of a family, distraught at their child’s sexual orientation, has been perfectly doled out in the show. Glen (Chris Hunter), brother of Spencer, does not approve of her sister’s lesbianism but begins accepting it, after his brother Clay passes away. It was the same with Paula, who after the Gay Pride in season 3, starts liking Ashley. | |||||||||||||||||
