The successful show Psych takes the simple idea of bringing together laughter-inducing events and investigative event-play, in a cauldron to conjure a masterpiece. This show focuses on the self-proclaimed physic abilities of Shawn Spencer to spur a series of comic moments.

In the premiere season, Shawn Spencer flaunts his “instinct” of sniffing evidence from the area of crime, to get absorbed in Santa Barbara Police Department. And from there on, the fake detective along with his associate Gus, brings out many unique crime investigation techniques.

Even though the character of Shawn is the center of attraction of the show, the misadventures of Gus bring the usual comic relief in every episode. In addition to these two characters, the appearance of Spencer’s father, Henry in the flashback, gives yet another edge to the plotline.

While Shawn is shown to be a man with all kinds of aspirations, Gus appears to be an utterly circumspect guy. The difference between the two characters pops up when the pharmaceutical salesman, Gus, shows his unwillingness to join the self-proclaimed detective in his ‘mission’ of unraveling the mysteries behind baffling criminal cases. The comedy-show, however eulogized the bond of friendship, by bringing them together.

The role of main protagonist Shawn Spencer is played by actor James Roday, who proves his mettle for being a perfect find for the character of a fake detective. On the other hand, actor-dancer, Dulé Hill very aptly represents the reluctant attitude of pharmaceutical salesman, Burton Guster a.k.a Gus.

Brainchild of Steve Franks, the show soared to popularity not just because of the impeccable characterization, but also because it managed to bring out a comedy-drama filled story arc in every episode. The technique of featuring Spencer’s father through cut-back sequences is utilized, to kick-off the psychological conflicts in the protagonist’s mind, as well as to link his past and present experiences of life.
