The baby of critically acclaimed novelist Michael Crichton, ER is a medical drama which ran a marathon, in terms of seasons (15) and episodes (331). The first installment of the show was aired in September, 1994 on NBC. The quality and the popularity of the show never waned, even as it completed one season after another. The show was the proud recipient of Emmy (23) and numerous other awards in late 1990’s. The whole story unfolds in the corridors and the emergency room of a fictional hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Anthony Edwards as Dr. Mark Green is one of the central characters for most of the seasons. Accompanied by Sherry Stringfield as Dr. Susan Lewis, and George Clooney as Dr. Douglas “Doug” Ross, he depicts the complex and sensitive nature of a medical practitioner’s job. Every episode narrates a story of another day in the life of a hospital. This brings in energy to the sitcom in every new episode, and keeps it fresh in the minds of the audience. Noah Wyle plays the role of a medical student who agrees to work without salary for his first year in his area of interest. He portrays a helpful medical representative who does not mind crossing one or two lines to help his patients. The sitcom takes the viewers through the daily pressures and politics that a medical station witnesses, even as it successfully captures the dynamics of the medical field and beautifully goes through the daily emotions that flow in a hospital ward. The stressful environment, demanding cases, and the hasty decision making, make the show a joyous ride. During its long run of 15 years, a lot of characters came and went, but the show is still maintaining its popularity. The charismatic actor, George Clooney’s career sky rocketed after he wore the white coat. The directorial team of Christopher Chulack, Jonathan Kaplan and Richard Thorpe worked wonders with the television series, and made it the longest running medical drama of all time. | |||||||||||||||||
